Explore 2024’s Ultimate Guide to Gas Stations That Do Cash Back

Editorial Note:

It seems like the world is going cashless. Between mobile bank transfers, PayPal, Venmo, and other digital financial apps, no one uses “real” folding money anymore. As for coins, maybe you’ll need a quarter for the parking meter if they don’t have an app. Yet, cash-only situations still happen, and there is no quicker embarrassment than realizing that you can’t pay your way. If your preferred bank is nowhere around, what do you do? You try the next best thing: find gas stations that do cash back.

While fuel stations are convenient, they are not ATMs. So, you may encounter certain obstacles.

Considerations when Using Fuel Station Cash Rewards Services and Debit Cards

  • Not every gas station offers cash back, and not every gas station takes any debit cards. Visa and MasterCard are the most commonly accepted cards, while Discover debit cards may face acceptance issues.
  • The cash you can get is usually low, and fees may be attached.
  • You may also have to make a minimum purchase, which may or may not cut into your total allowable withdrawal.

If you’re lucky, you’re reading this article from the comfort of your home. We know there’s a slight chance you’re reading this right, as you need cash. So let’s cut to the chase and start talking about fuel stations that do cash back and those that do not.

What Gas Stations Do Cash Back

Fortunately, 19 gas station brands offer cash rewards, some of which are national. Policies can vary from store to store. Some brands are owned by corporate, and local independent franchise holders own some.

Bonus tip: if you have a loyalty card, see if your purchase earns you additional program points.

We advise that you call and verify that the fuel station you plan to go to offers cash back. To find the nearest location, click on the gas station’s name and enter your address or zip code.

Some gas stations attached to certain grocery and superstore chains also offer cash back.

Kroger branded stations offer up to $100 cash rewards with a debit card. Customers can also access up to $20 from a personal check. A $3 fee can apply for amounts over $100. Gas stations include Pay-Less Supermarkets, Smith’s, JayC Food Stores, Fry’s Food Stores,  King Soopers, and Kroger.

Costco and Wal-Mart also offer cash back at their gas stations. If you’re at Costco, you can get up to $60 cash rewards, but you must be a Costco member. Wal-Mart offers up to $100 for debit card cash back and $20 from a personal check. Customers can only get cashback in multiples of $20, so you can’t get $35 cash back. There is no word on whether fees apply to use this service at Costco or Wal-Mart, so call and double-check if possible.

Fuel Stations that Do NOT Offer Cash Back

As was mentioned earlier, not every gas station offers cash back. This may be a corporate policy or a choice made by a local, independently owned and operated franchise. Gas stations operate on razor-thin profit margins. The bank and card provider fees may be too expensive for the fuel station to offer this service.

Regardless, suppose you are at any of the following brands. In that case, you must look elsewhere for cashback: Cumberland Farms, GetGo, Pilot / Flying J, Speedway, Xtra Mart, Wawa, RaceTrac, Fastrip, Town Pump, Sheetz, Thorton’s, Turkey Hill, Holiday Stationstores, Love’s.

A Note About Financial Safety

While not as expected at the in-store counter, card skimmers can be found on some payment devices. Newer models have been designed to make it harder to install skimmers, but criminals keep trying new workarounds. Here’s some advice for you.

  • Before using the payment device, inspect it for tampering. If you have suspicions, don’t use it.
  • If your card has been compromised at a fuel station, contact your bank immediately to help reduce your liability. You may be issued an emergency card, which can be mailed to your permanent address or an address of your choice.

Credit Card Cash Advances: Fees and Risks

Credit Cards Cash Advances

  1. Credit cards offer cash advances and are advertised as an option for lower fraud liability.
  2. Some credit cards may offer cash advances for free, but many charge fees. There is a one-time cash advance fee equal to 3% of your withdrawal and an ATM fee of up to $5.
  3. Credit cards charge a different interest rate for the cash advance, generally higher than your regular purchase APR.
  4. A cash advance, on the other hand, has no grace period, so interest starts generating immediately.

Check If the Gas Station You Use Offers Cash Back

Sometimes you need cash on hand, and your bank or ATM may not be conveniently located nearby. In that case, knowing that the local fuel station may come to the rescue is reassuring. Before you go, call and verify that the gas station you plan to visit offers cash back. Fuel stations that do cash back accept most major debit cards. It’s better to know before you swipe.

Roman Zelvenschi

I started a digital marketing agency Romanz Media Group Inc. 12 years ago. Running my own business quickly taught me the importance of cash flow. Making sales was not enough, I had to have money in the bank to pay the vendors, staff and personal bills.

During those early stages of the company I learned how to get creative with debt and to save on interest cost. I paid for everything I could with a credit card to both get more points and to extend the payment date by 25 days (credit card grace period). I then utilized a 0% balance transfer offers to rotate this debt.

I learned a lot during this process and made a lot of mistakes. My key lesson is that the most important part of being financially independent is how much I managed to save, rather than how much I earned. Staying disciplined with savings and tracking spending is not easy and I tried many different methods to stay on track.

FinancialFreedom.Guru is a side project where I and my staff are trying to share the practical knowledge on how to understand finances and to build wealth.
